Remove background

Cut a photo's background out with a local ML model, output: transparent PNG or solid colour.

runs entirely in your browser

First time? The ML model (~170 MB) is downloaded once from staticimgly.com. After that everything runs in your browser, no credits, no queue.

Your photo doesn't leave your device. Only the model is fetched, and even that only on first use (your browser caches it).

Works best on people, products and pets. With architecture or fine details (hair, branches, glass) the result may contain semi-transparent patches.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo itself never leaves your device, processing happens entirely in your browser via WebAssembly. What does come from a server is the ML model (~170 MB), fetched once from staticimgly.com. After that it's in your browser cache.

How long does the ~170 MB model take to download?

On a fast home connection: 15-25 seconds the first time. On mobile 4G: 2-3 minutes. After that, zero: your browser caches the model and loads it instantly on subsequent uses. We deliberately use the largest model (isnet full-precision), the smaller variants produce visibly weaker edges.

What if the result isn't good enough?

The model is strong on people, products, and pets. A portrait, a product shot on a plain background, or your dog in the garden, it's stable there. Architecture (white siding + white sky), glass, thin objects like hair or branches against a busy backdrop, or photos with similar luminance on both sides of the edge are harder. The model 'guesses' and you get semi-transparent patches or missed edges. A different photo with more colour contrast between subject and background often works much better. For critical cut-out work (product photos for your store) a professional tool is still worth it.

Which input formats work?

JPG, PNG, WebP. HEIC (iPhone photos) get auto-converted to JPG before processing. Output is always PNG, with transparency or a solid background colour of your choice.

Can this be free because the ML model is open-source?

Yes. We use @imgly/background-removal, an open-source library with a self-trained model. No API calls, no credits, no rate limits. For commercial use, check the library license.
