Calculate Dutch VAT: add it to or take it from an amount
3 min read
If you have an amount excluding VAT, you add the VAT on top: at 21% you multiply by 1.21. If you have an amount including VAT, you divide by 1.21 to find the amount excluding VAT, and the difference is the VAT. The VAT calculator does that for you at 21%, 9% and 0%, entirely in your browser.
As a freelancer you work with VAT all day: a quote excluding, a receipt including, an invoice with a few lines at different rates. In your head or in a spreadsheet that goes wrong just as often, and one rounding slip makes your return messy. A simple calculator takes the puzzling away.
The VAT calculator tool adds VAT to or takes it from an amount, sums multiple lines, and shows the VAT per rate. You do not have to remember anything, and no account or subscription is involved.

Taking VAT out of an amount (including to excluding)
Have an amount including VAT and want to know how much VAT is in it? Divide the gross amount by 1 plus the rate. At 21% you divide by 1.21. From 121 euro including, 100 euro excluding remains, and the VAT is the difference: 21 euro. At 9% you divide by 1.09.
Adding VAT to an amount (excluding to including)
The other way around is addition. From a net amount you add the VAT: at 21% you multiply by 0.21 for the VAT, and by 1.21 for the amount including VAT. So 100 euro excluding becomes 121 euro including. In the tool you set the switch to "Excluding VAT" or "Including VAT", and the rest follows automatically.
Which rate: 21%, 9% or 0%
- 21% is the general rate, for most goods and services.
- 9% applies to things like food, books, medicines and a number of services.
- 0% is for exports, supplies within the EU, reverse-charge VAT or when you use the small-businesses scheme.
If you are not sure which rate applies, check the Belastingdienst website. The tool lets you pick a rate per line, so an invoice with both 21% and 9% adds up correctly in one go.
KOR and reverse-charge VAT
If you take part in the small-businesses scheme (KOR), you do not charge or pay VAT and you leave it off your invoice. You also cannot reclaim the VAT on your purchases. In the tool you pick 0% and note on your invoice that the KOR applies.
With reverse-charge VAT the liability shifts to your customer, for example in construction or with customers within the EU. Such an invoice shows 0% with the text "btw verlegd" (VAT reverse-charged), and the customer reports the VAT. This calculator does the maths but is not tax advice; if you are unsure about your own situation, check with your bookkeeper or the Belastingdienst.

Frequently asked questions
How do I take the VAT out of an amount that includes it?
Divide the gross amount by 1 plus the rate. At 21% you divide by 1.21 to find the net amount, and the difference is the VAT. So 121 euro including 21% is 100 net and 21 VAT.
How do I add VAT to an amount?
Multiply the net amount by the rate. At 21% the VAT is the amount times 0.21, and the amount including VAT is the amount times 1.21. So 100 euro net becomes 121 euro including VAT.
Which VAT rate applies to me?
21% is the general rate. 9% applies to things like food, books, medicines and some services. 0% is for exports, EU supplies, reverse-charge VAT or when you use the KOR. If you are unsure, check the Belastingdienst list.
Are my amounts stored?
No. The calculation happens entirely in your browser. Nothing goes to a server and nothing is kept.
